The 2021 BMW X4 occupies an interesting niche between its bulkier cousin, the X3, and the larger X6 coupe. However, it really comes into its own when it comes to style and power, with proper
sporty handling and the option of the X4M, which pulls in an impressive 500 hp. To help you get the feel for this luxury SUV, we’ve put together this short buyer’s guide to give you some idea of what to expect.
A Buyer’s Guide to the 2021 BMW X4
Overview
The X4 is a big step up from its predecessor and includes lots of new features for the 2021 model year, including a new set of safety features as standard and capabilities for Android Auto, which is now built into the impressive and intuitive infotainment package.
The choice of engines, especially for the performance focused X4M allows for a top-notch powertrain to match the sporty exterior; also included is an active rear differential.
Powertrain Options
There are a wide variety of powertrain options available on the X4, all of which come equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive as standard. The basic xDrive30i model comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 that can produce 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
The higher models all come with 3.0-liter turbocharged I6 engines, although with the X4M you can expect that bit more horsepower, up to 503 with the competition package, due to the addition of an extra turbocharger.
Interior
The X4 has space to seat 5, with a reasonable amount of legroom and up to 50 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. The X4 now includes a 10.3-inch touchscreen on all available trims as part of the infotainment system that can support Apple CarPlay as well as the newly added Android Auto.
Also included with the extensive technology package is a standard 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and the option of a 16-speaker premium sound system.
Safety
The BMW active driver assistant is now offered as standard on the X4, along with its extensive suite of intelligent collision avoidance systems. These include blind-spot monitoring, a lane departure warning system, and rear cross-traffic alerts.
If you’re looking for adaptive cruise control, it’s available under a separate package called Driving Assistance Professional. Also available is the Executive Package, which adds a 360-degree camera, parking sensors, and assistance, and automatic-high beam curve adapted headlights.
Pricing
The new X4 starts at a not unreasonable $51,600 for the basic xDrive30i model and ranges all the way up to 61,700 for the M40i, which is a reasonable middle of the road model. If you’re thinking of the X4 M, that’ll set you back a minimum of $73,400, but you can expect some of the best driving power that BMW has to offer.
