The BMW 4 Series has various options, including rear- or all-wheel drive, various body types, and an option between a four-cylinder 430i or turbocharged six-cylinder M440i engine. The dynamics and reactivity of the 4 Series are enjoyable because it’s identical to the more traditional 3 Series underneath, but it offers a sportier 2-door style. Let’s take a closer look at the new 4 Series to see what’s similar and what has changed.

Similar Performance With a New Look

While based on the 3 Series sedan, the 4 Series is offered as a coupe, a convertible, or a sleek and sporty sedan. The coupe and convertible remain mostly the same, but the Shadowline Appearance package for the M Sport now includes brakes with red or blue calipers.

You’ll get the same phenomenal performance from the 4 Series thanks to the standard 8-speed automatic transmission that provides the feel of driving a sports car. The entry-level 430i model has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged B46 engine, providing 255 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The EPA estimates a rating of 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

If you’re looking for speed, opt for the more powerful M440i. Equipped with the astonishingly impressive turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine, BMW claims it accelerates from 0 to 60 mpg in 4.3 seconds. Yet, others have recorded times up to 0.4 seconds lower. It’s rated at 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.

Interior and Cargo

Buyers may not see many differences in the cabin from the driver’s seat since the interior materials, primary controls, and dashboard layout appear identical. Though, all models now have a faux-leather dashboard cover.

Standard Driver-Assistance and Safety Features With Advanced Options

Several driver-assistance features still come standard, and a handful of optional advanced features are now available. Key safety features include:

  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist
  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Available adaptive cruise control

The infotainment system in the Premium package no longer features the unpopular gesture controls, and only the top-spec M440i models have the option for the dead-up display. Additionally, the options sheet now includes a Parking Assistance package.
