Capable Turbocharged Engine
To propel the BMW 540i, its smooth 3.0L turbocharged six-cylinder engine provides 375 horsepower and is mated to an 8-speed shiftable automatic transmission. That’s enough power to give the 4365 lb luxury sedan a 0 to 60 mph time of just 4 seconds and cover a quarter mile in 12.5 seconds. While driving, you will immediately notice the absence of turbo lag and the satisfying throttle response – courtesy of the exhaust manifold with two headers.
Impressive Fuel Economy
On top of its sports car-grade performance, the 540i delivers an excellent fuel economy of 26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined. What makes these figures even more impressive is the sedan’s all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain. You can drive without worrying about the fuel indicator, with a full tank of gas lasting you 413.4 miles in a city, and 524.6 miles on a highway.
Aggressive Yet Classy Styling
You will not mistake the BMW for anything else with its signature kidney grilles. The front fascia features angular headlights and an aerodynamically sculpted hood, but the sedan retains its professional look with several luxury car design cues. 19-inch aluminum wheels are standard, but you can opt for 20-inch silver light alloy or 21-inch individual bi-color alloy wheels.
First Class Interior
The leatherette sport front seats provide excellent comfort and are 8-way power-adjustable with 2 memory settings. You can seat 3 passengers in the rear on the 40-20-40 folding bench. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and front and rear cupholders are standard on the 540i, but you can upgrade the cabin with several packages based on your needs. For instance, the Executive Package offers a heated steering wheel and a sky lounge roof.
The dashboard immediately catches the eye with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a large 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen that has integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. To stream your favorite songs, the 540i offers one of the industry’s best audio systems, 12 Harman/Kardon premium speakers, and 2 subwoofers. You don’t have to worry about your smartphone dying while streaming, thanks to the USB port.
Driver Assistance and Safety Features
Being a 5-series sedan, the 540i has a full suite of driver-assistive and safety features. Cruise control is standard and the controls are mounted onto the steering wheel. Other technology that comes with the 540i includes parking assist, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings, an accident avoidance system, and automatic emergency braking.
